Setting up Adaware

Downloading, Installing, and Using Ad-Aware

Ad-Aware is an anti-adware/anti-spyware utility. It removes unwanted programs that may slow down your computer, or steal your personal information.

These screenshots are based on Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (sp2). Your screens may not be the same as you see here.

STEP 1 Go to http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

STEP 2 Click on the red "DOWNLOAD NOW" button.

STEP 3 Click on the "Download Now" link on the download.com page.

STEP 4 A popup box will appear asking you what you want to do with this file. Click on "Save" to save the file to your computer.

STEP 6 After the file has finished downloading, you can click on the "Run" or "Open" button.

Installing Ad-Aware

STEP 7 After clicking on "Run" (or double clicking on the file) a popup box may appear, asking you if you are sure you want to run this program. Click on "Run".

STEP 8 A new box will appear, welcoming you to the setup program.

Make sure to close other programs before continuing

Click "Next"

STEP 9 Read the license agreement, and if you agree to the license agreement, Check "I accept the license agreement".

Then click "Next"

STEP 10 The setup program will now ask where you want to save the program files.

Usually the best choice is to allow anyone to use the program.

Click "Next"

STEP 12 The setup program will now tell you that you are ready to begin installing the program.

Click "Next"

STEP 13 After the program finishes installing, another screen will ask you what you want to do.

If you are not able to get online at the time, uncheck "Update definition file now".

Unless you want to read the help file, uncheck "Open the help file now".

Click "Finish"

Running Ad-Aware for the first time

STEP 14 If you left the first two options checked on the last screen, a new box will appear. Ad-aware is downloading updates for itself. If it is not up to date, you will not be protected from the latest Adware/Spyware threats.

STEP 15 Next Ad-aware will begin a system scan, searching for Adware/Spyware

STEP 16 After the scan has completed, a screen will show the results of the scanning.

To remove all items detected, right click and then left click on "Select All Objects". All items should now be checked.

(Note: Any items called a "MRU List" do not need to be removed. These items are lists of recently used files and programs, such as the recently used files list in Word. You may want to keep these lists. If you do want to keep these lists, uncheck "MRU List", or click on "Critical Objects" before clicking on "Select All Objects".) Then click "Next".

Ad-Aware will ask you if you want to remove the items you selected, and how many items there were.

Click "OK".

After it has removed all of the items, a box will appear, telling how many items were removed

Click "OK".

You will now be at the main program screen. You can now close the program.

Remember to update and run the program often to keep your computer free of adware/spyware.
